Left of Centre Ideas to Get Fit!

14/2/2017

Here in the Just Knead It clinic, we’ve been talking a lot about our health and fitness goals for 2017 – New Year’s Resolutions if you will. We were all able to prattle off a list of vague goals for the year like “cut down on Freddo Frogs”,“start running again”and “go back to the gym”. But when really thought about it we all unanimously agreed that these targets are hard to tackle on our own let alone without a tangible goal to aim for. Let’s face it, finding the motivation to haul yourself out of bed at 5am to drag yourself up and down the Kangaroo Point Stairs is hard at the best of times, but even harder when you don’t have a specific event to work towards.
So, here at Just Knead It, we started doing a bit of brainstorming to come up with a list of awesome events in 2017 to help all of us reach those (sometimes elusive) goals!

Trex Multisport Festival
  • 11 February
  • If you’re up for something a little bit off the beaten track (literally) then have a look at the Trex Multosport Festival. Taking place in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, the festival includes X-Tri, trail run, mountain bike and the truly unique ‘Dirt Master’ events. If you want to get involved, see their website for more info: http://trextriathlon.com.au/events/

Stretch Yoga Beginners Course
  • February 18th
  • Ever wanted to try yoga but are daunted by the prospect given that you can’t even touch your toes let alone do a downward dog? Stretch yoga runs regular beginner courses at their Brisbane studios to help introduce you to the practice of yoga step-by-step. Visit their website to find out more:

Learn to Row GPS
  • 4th March
  • As some of you may already know, quite a few of us here at JKI are (mildly) obsessed with rowing. If you’re keen to get involved in this oarsome sport (pun intended) then have a look at one of Brisbane and GPS Rowing Club’s learn to row programs!

Noosa winter sports festival
  • May 27
  • Everyone who has an instagram account knows about the Noosa Tri Festival (#fitfam) but have you heard of the Noosa Ultimate Sports Festival? Don’t be turned off by the fancy name – you don’t have to be an iron man to do this (though you can do an iron man if you like) – there are events to suit all ages and abilities. Check out their website to see what event might interest you:

Gold Coast Airport Marthon
  • 1-2 July
  • The Gold Coast Marathon is an annual favourite for many as it offers participants with a scenic (and more importantly) flat course. There are a range of events to participate in, ranging from the full marathon to a 2km ‘dash’ just for the kids. Its always a great event – and your can support a charity of your choosing at the same time!

MS Moonlight Walk
  • Taking place along the Brisbane River, participants can complete either the 5km or 10km at your own pace all while raising money and awareness for MS! Its always a great evening and lots of fun to do in a group – especially if you dress up for the occasion.
  • Expressions of interest for the 2017 walk are now open, so head over to their website to check it out:

Bridge to Brisbane
  • 27 August 2017
  • This is an obvious one for anyone living in the Brisbane region as its already on everyone’s radar. Last year, the event had a makeover and established its new 10km and 5km courses around Southbank and the City. You can complete it at your own pace and even do it as a team. Its always a lot of fun and for a good cause. Visit the website to find out more: http://bridgetobrisbaneday.com.au

Winter Racing Series and Head of the Brisbane (September – October)
  • Quickly establishing itself as a ‘must’ on all rower’s regatta calendars, Head of the Brisbane 2017 is not to missed. The 10km race starts and finishes at Toowong Rowing Club where there are food and drink stalls set up for the Day on the Green. Head on over (pun intended) to the website to find out more about how to get involved http://headofthebrisbane.com
Le Marathon Du Medoc
  • 9 September
  • Fancy combining a marathon with a wine and chateaux tour through the beautiful vineayrds of france? Then the Marathon Du Medoc is for you! While the Daily Telegraph hailed it as the world’s “most idiotic marathon", this event sounds like our cup of tea (or glass of wine). Visit their website to find out more  or if youre in the mood for a good laugh as the event video never fails to deliver: http://www.marathondumedoc.com/index.php
