What is Exercise Physiology?
The goal of an exercise physiologist is to use physical activity to and improve and or maintain all areas of health and wellbeing. Physical can come in the form of strength-based or mobility exercises or cardiovascualar fitness in order to keep you happy, healthy, pain-free and functioning at your best, long-term.
Exercise Physiology is a field of health related to your body and how it moves. Physiology is the science of life. It encompasses all of your systems including your muscular system; heart and blood vessels known as your cardiovascular system; your brain and nerves (nervous system); respiratory system, which relates to your airways, lungs and breathing; your skeletal system as well as many more.

The first goal of an exercise physiologist is to help you become pain-free whilst doing the things you enjoy. They can help rehabilitate you from injury across a myriad of conditions from a sprained ankle, knee pain, lower back injury, a rotator cuff tear or general stiffness whilst sitting at a desk all day.

Recovery or management from a health event/ chronic condition.

When an injury, health event or chronic condition occurs it may have impacted your health, level of fitness and/or strength to such a point that we need to rebuild your foundations first. Your exercise physiologist will help you rebuild your confidence in movement, your basic strength and movement ability to function on a day to day basis. They can also help you with stress management, healthy eating shifts and sleeping patterns that all play a part in the management of a chronic health condition.

When Would I See an Exercise Physiologist over a PT or Physio?
The best part about an exercise physiologist is they can fit in with your life and the people who are already on your heath team.
The main difference between a PT and an exercise physiologist is that an Exercise Physiologist is a university-qualified health professional. Due to this they are better equipped to handle not only general health and wellbeing but recovery from injury and management of chronic health conditions. They can also work in with your PT by creating a program that you can then execute as part and/or in combination with your regular training.
The main difference between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist is that physio generally focuses on acute management and the initial stages of rehab from an injury or health condition. Exercise physiology on the other hand is about longer-term health management and return to physical activity or sport, post injury or surgery. They do this through the use of exercise where as physio generally has a more hands on approach.
